A targeted drilling and dating campaign to identify Stone Age archaeological sites before excavation in west coast southern Africa

چکیده

Here we present the results of a targeted drilling campaign that facilitated geochronological study with coarse sampling resolution inside new cave site, Simons Cave, on west coast southern Africa. A combination radiocarbon (14C) dating and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) was used as range-finder. Results confirmed preservation Holocene late Pleistocene sediments up to 133 ± 35 ka, overlapping ages Middle Stone Age (MSA) occupations broader region. subsequent, systematic test-excavation at site then embarked second higher resolution. Ultimately, comparative potential Cave for exploration hominin occupation through later Holocene, yet raised several issues concerning direct comparability information deriving from drilled sediment cores actual archaeological excavation.

Radiometric dating of the Earlier Stone Age sequence in excavation I at Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa: preliminary results.

We present here the results of 44 paleomagnetic measurements, and single cosmogenic burial and optically stimulated luminescence ages for the Earlier Stone Age deposits from Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape, South Africa. The resulting paleomagnetic sequence: N>R>N>R>N constrains the Earlier Stone Age strata in this part of the site to between approximately 0.78-1.96 Ma. A single cosmogenic date ...

Archaeological excavations at Big Forest Park, West Coast, New Zealand

The machinery of the Big River mine is the most complete historical assemblage of in situ machinery for quartz mining in New Zealand. Excavations were carried out to mitigate the effects of reconstruction of the winding engine house. Comprehensive and extensive drainage of the original working compound between the winding engine, bath house, engineer's workshop and the upper terminal of the aer...

Dating and context of rock engravings in southern Africa.

Rock art is seldom recovered from sealed archeological contexts and is therefore difficult to date or integrate with other artifactual assemblages. South African engravings, found on low rocks at open-air sites, exemplify the problem. Multiscale spatial study of technique, thematic variation, faunal content, geoarcheological paterning, settlement history, and ethno-archeological setting provide...

The Middle Stone Age of the northern Kenyan Rift: age and context of new archaeological sites from the Kapedo Tuffs.

Rift Valley sites in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya preserve the oldest fossil remains attributed to Homo sapiens and the earliest archaeological sites attributed to the Middle Stone Age (MSA). New localities from the Kapedo Tuffs augment the sparse sample of MSA sites from the northern Kenya Rift. Tephrostratigraphic correlation with dated pyroclastic deposits from the adjacent volcano S...

Trauma and violence in the Later Stone Age of southern Africa.

BACKGROUND Antemortem and perimortem fractures in skeletons recovered from Later Stone Age burials in southern Africa demonstrate that people were, on occasion, the victims of severe trauma attributable to interpersonal violence. METHODS Case studies are presented of cranial vault depression fractures on 4 different individuals and a young adult female who had 2 bone arrowheads embedded in th...
